About Us

Introduction: Who We Are

The wide-spread wings of Blue Owl Bohemia encompass a wide spectum of resources, activities and events that combine to make it a hub of inspiration and community for anyone interested in or touched by the English language. A small, independently owned mom-and-pop enterprise in the small north Bohemian village of Loužnice, our doors are open to everyone who has a desire to learn or improve their English and to deepen their understanding of anglophone literature and culture. Blue Owl Bohemia offers not only a unique lending library and study center for children and youths, but also the Blue Owl Book Mart —an antiquarian bookshop specializing in rare and out-of-print books. Our shelves feature signed editions and specialized publicationss in niche areas of interest difficult to find anywhere else including (but not limited to) books covering the topic of glass from fine art to bead crafting, small press poetry, painting, photography and fine literature. Yes, we're a little quirky. Maybe a little out-of- step with the advance of technology and the spread of information as an impersonal social phenomenon. But we aren't blind to the fact that English has undeniably become the lingua franca of the early 21st century — a social glue for people throughout the world. It is the first language for around half a billion people and is a second language for around 85 percent of European students. Gaining a command of communicating in English opens up a world of opportunities and possibilities. One of our guiding principles is to help young learners of English become better at speaking, writing, spelling in English – and to have some fun while doing it. Our primary mission is to foster enthusiasm for the English language in a stress-free environment through conversation and play — and also through books. Fun, learning and the enjoyment that comes from learning and broadening our horizons never goes out of date. We believe that Blue Owl Bohemia is the only place in north Bohemia – if not the entire Czech Republic – where young people can come to borrow a wide range of English books and get free drop-in help with their studies from native English speakers. We are more than just a repository of knowledge, we are a community center, offering a range of special events in English or jointly in English and Czech – from poetry readings, to film and music evenings, to specialized workshops  and guest lectures by experts on their topics.
We also offer an early-learners group for preschool-age children and story hours, where we will introduce young children to the English language and culture through fairy tales, songs, games and other activities. We wish not only to promote the English language face-to-face and friend-to-friend, but also to introduce students to the customs and culture of the “anglosphere”, as well as regional foods, holidays and history. What we hope that we will never become is a place of last resort, a place where parents compell their children go after receiving a failing or borderline failing grade in English. We do not wish to be a place where students themselves don’t want to be. We will never be able to be all things to all people, but we can be an analogue of human discovery in a sea of digital chaos for those still believe in the virtues of a smile and the efficacy of hands-on learning. In brief, that's what Blue Owl Bohemia is, and we invite you to be part of it. We are Mimi and Tim Rogers, an American couple who have lived in the Czech Republic since 1994 and have called Loužnice home since 1998. We run Blue Owl Bohemia as a family business with our sons, who have been raised in a bilingual environment. Our sons are a crucial linguistic bridge in helping Blue Owl to take flight. We hope you will join us as the air under our wings as we soar into the blue.
